Cancer Treatment Options in Kent
Combining experts from a range of specialities, our team works collaboratively to develop a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. Among the many specialists who outline your comprehensive care plan are surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists. Treatments provided on our Kent campus include the following.
Medical Oncology
Our board-certified oncologists prescribe your medical therapy, and our highly trained nursing staff administers that therapy intravenously, orally or through injection. Among the medical treatments provided at Bayhealth Cancer Center (Kent) are the following.
-
Chemotherapy: Often used in combination with radiation or surgery, chemotherapy is an intravenous (IV) drug therapy intended to destroy cancer cells or slow their growth. The specific drugs used during your chemotherapy (and how often they are administered) depend on the type, stage and location of your cancer. Our Kent campus hosts 14 chemotherapy bays, all of which feature sliding glass panels that give you the option to converse with other patients or receive treatments privately.
-
Immunotherapy: This novel drug therapy boosts your immune system by empowering your cells to more effectively fight cancer. While some types of immunotherapy teach your cells to attack specific forms of cancer (CAR T-cell therapy), others increase your immune system’s cancer-fighting powers overall (targeted molecular therapy).
-
Targeted Drug Therapy: Our cancer experts administer a combination of substances such as antibodies and growth inhibitors during this treatment procedure. The exact drugs and how they’re administered depend on several factors, including the type, stage and location of your cancer.
Radiation Oncology
Our team may use external beam radiation in combination with other treatments to address your cancer. Employing sophisticated technology, our certified radiation therapy team concentrates high-energy beams of radiation on the precise parts of your body affected by disease. Among the radiation procedures provided at Bayhealth Cancer Center (Kent) are the following.
-
External Radiation: The most common form of radiation therapy, external beam radiation directs high-energy rays from outside the body. Among the many forms of this procedure offered on our Kent campus are Stereotactic Body Radiation Treatment (SBRT) and Intensity-Modulated Radiation Treatment (IMRT). Our Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) uses the most cutting-edge equipment and technologies, such as the VitalBeam linear accelerator from Varian.
-
Brachytherapy: During this treatment approach, your radiation oncologist places radioactive material into or near the cancerous area.
-
Radionuclide Therapy: Less invasive than other internal radiation therapies, this procedure uses radioactive material that can be swallowed or injected.
Other Services We Offer
Our team of experts at the Bayhealth Cancer Center in Kent provides numerous additional services to patients and families. Those services include the following.
-
Clinical Research Program: Clinical trials are research studies that test new drugs, procedures, and technologies with the purpose of establishing new or better ways of treating cancer. Members of your Bayhealth cancer care team can review your options and help you to determine whether any open clinical trials might be an option for your treatment plan.
-
Genetic Counseling Program: A family history of certain cancers can increase the risk that you will develop the disease at some point in your life. In clinical partnership with Penn Medicine’s Telegenetics Program, Bayhealth provides genetic counseling services to our patients. Using video-conferencing software that can be accessed on our Kent and Sussex campuses, genetic counselors from the Abramson Cancer Center will discuss your personal and family history with you and make genetic testing recommendations. These tests provide insight into your cancer risks and help our multidisciplinary medical team to determine the best treatment plan for your condition. Learn more about our telegenetics program by calling 302-674-4401.
-
Nurse Navigation Program: Our nurse navigators offer further support by helping patients to schedule, prepare for, and recover from procedures and therapies. Nurse navigators also facilitate community outreach, providing access to cancer screenings to uninsured and underserved populations. A clinical trials nurse screens all new patients for potential participation in clinical trials.
-
Survivorship Program: Before, during and after your cancer treatments, our experts remain dedicated to improving your quality of life. We can help you establish healthy routines and connect you to support groups that foster community. Learn more.
-
Support Services: Our care team supports you in establishing healthy routines that help you stay in control of your daily symptoms. We also host support groups that provide patients and families opportunities to connect and share their experiences—because a strong network of support can help to make the realities of cancer more manageable.
