A Journey of Resilience: Paris Johnson’s Inspiring Story

Cancer can often feel like quite a challenge. But for Paris Johnson, the diagnosis has been the catalyst for a remarkable transformation. His journey – one of perseverance, self-discovery and hope – reminds us that no matter the obstacles life throws at us, we have the power to overcome and thrive. Despite both lung cancer and COVID – and with the help of his care team at Bayhealth – Johnson emerged stronger, with a new sense of purpose and a renewed outlook on life.

Johnson’s story began in Chester, Pennsylvania, where he grew up before moving to Dover at the age of seven. As a military kid, he was used to change, and the transition to Dover set the stage for a life of resilience. For years, Johnson dedicated his career to food service, a field that not only supported him but also brought him a sense of pride. Today, he continues to work at Delaware State University, where he works in food service.

Cancer runs deep in Johnson’s family. His mother, father and cousins all battled the disease, and in 2018, Johnson lost his mother to cancer. The heartache of that loss would soon become a part of his own journey. In 2020, Johnson was diagnosed with lung cancer, a disease that would forever change the course of his life.

But Johnson wasn’t going to let cancer define him. Despite the challenges ahead he stayed hopeful and determined. Shortly after his diagnosis, the world was struck by the COVID-19 pandemic. Johnson contracted the virus and, after spending time in the hospital, found himself in a wheelchair for three months due to the debilitating effects of COVID-19.

The unfortunate side effect of his COVID diagnosis was that it delayed his cancer treatment. During that time, the cancer spread, but he didn’t lose hope. He knew that the fight was far from over.

A New Treatment and a Fresh Start

In the face of this setback, Johnson’s oncologist, Rishi Sawhney, MD, suggested a new treatment plan that offered minimal side effects and had the added benefit of preventing him from losing his hair. This new treatment marked the beginning of a hopeful new chapter in Johnson’s journey. For more than two years, he underwent treatment that eventually put him into remission by February 2024.

Now Johnson goes in for monthly maintenance medication, a commitment that helps ensure his cancer stays in check. But it’s not just about the treatment – it’s about the renewed perspective that cancer has given him.

A New Outlook on Life

“Cancer has totally changed my life,” Johnson said. “I view my life differently now; it has made me better. I did what I had to do to work with it.”

With his health improving, Johnson found a new passion for helping others. He decided to pursue an education in human services with a focus on helping autistic adults. This new career path reflects his deep desire to make a positive impact on others, just as he has been supported through his own battle.

In addition to his studies, Johnson has even considered starting his own business and has partnered with a personal trainer to focus on his physical health. He has adopted healthier eating habits and remains motivated to achieve his personal goals.

Finding Peace and Gratitude

Johnson now enjoys simple pleasures that many of us take for granted. He takes regular walks at Silver Lake, where he finds peace and clarity. He’s also deeply grateful for the cancer center team, who not only treated his condition but also took the time to get to know him as a person. Their compassion and support were crucial in helping him maintain his strength throughout his battle.

“Going through this has been a great journey with little side effects,” Johnson shared. “I’m grateful for the lessons I’ve learned along the way. My outlook is positive, and I feel like I’ve been given a second chance at life.”

Johnson’s message to others who are facing a similar battle is simple but powerful: “You can live your life with cancer. You can live a full life. Don’t give up – ask questions and get to know your doctor.”

Cancer is never easy, but it doesn’t have to be the end of your story. “With the right attitude and support, even the most difficult challenges can lead to personal growth and new beginnings,” Johnson concluded.

As he looks ahead to the future, Johnson is more determined than ever to live life to its fullest, making better choices and cherishing every moment. His courage, resilience and faith in God inspire us all to approach life with gratitude, strength and the unwavering belief that we can overcome anything.
