Requirements and Apply

The Bayhealth Internal Medicine Residency Program will review applications in the order of perceived alignment with program eligibility, mission, and aims (fit). The Program also ranks applicants in the order of perceived fit as required by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Our goal is to determine if an applicant will be a good fit in our residency program, organization, and community using the information provided in the application and during the interview. The Program will conduct holistic review of applications to determine which applicants to interview and rank.

• The Program will begin reviewing applications on the date applications are released in ERAS. The Program will not review applications received on or after the last interview day.

• Interview Invitations will be sent to applicants on the first Monday of each month at 2pm EST.

• Invitations may be sent outside of these dates in the event of a cancellation or rescheduling if no applicant is Waitlisted for the interview session. If the Waitlist is used, applicants on the Waitlist will be contacted in the order listed.

• The Program will not send more invitations than available interview slots at any time during recruitment. However, the Program cannot guarantee available slots will be convenient for the applicant. If this occurs, please consider using the Waitlist available for all interview dates. The Program will not include Waitlisted applicants when determining the number of available interview slots.

• The Program may choose not to send invitations on any date if there are no available interview slots.

• Once sent, offers must be accepted or declined within 72 hours (12pm EST on the first Thursday of each month). At that time the offer is rescinded; however, the applicant may receive another invitation on the next release date at the Program’s discretion. We understand that applicant priorities change throughout the interview season. If an interview invitation is received, we encourage undecided applicants to schedule or Waitlist for an interview later in the season.

• All interviews will be conducted virtually via Thalamus. There will be multiple interview dates with up to two sessions per day. The first interview date will be held in the first half of October, and interviews will conclude by the end of January. Applicants will also be scheduled for an informational session at 5pm EST on the Monday of their scheduled interview week.

• All interviewed applicants will be invited to participate in an optional Virtual Meet and Greet with current residents or other informational sessions that are deemed beneficial to applicants. Attendance or absence at any optional event will not affect ranking.

Applications will not be reviewed until all required documents are released to the Program.

• Minimum three Letters of Recommendation (SLOE preferred but not required)

• If applicable, ECFMG Certification Statement

Applications will be reviewed and evaluated on the following preferred criteria. Please note: If an applicant does not meet one or more preferred criteria, the applicant will not be automatically disqualified. The Program will consider applicants who require a visa, and will determine visa sponsorship (H-1B Visa sponsored by the Program or J-1 Visa sponsored by ECFMG) after interviews conclude but before rank lists are due. All reviewed applications will be ranked in order of perceived program fit, and invitations will be sent to the applicants with the highest perceived fit.

Applicants will be offered interviews on a case by case basis after a complete holistic review of the following:

• Review of test scores - USMLE and/or COMLEX

• No failed attempts preferred but not required

• Preferred USMLE 225 or above

• Preferred COMLEX 550 or above

• Current Student or within 2 years of graduation preferred

• Diverse experiences (volunteer, research, work) preferred

• Review of academic progress in the MSPE

• No course fails or remediation preferred but not required

• If a fail or remediation occurred, proof of improvement in future courses heavily preferred

• Reasons given for fail or remediation will be reviewed if available

• Grade for sub-internship in Internal Medicine or subspecialty preferred but not required

• Local connection - Medical School State, Current Address State, or Permanent Address State equals Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, or Virginia, or completed rotation(s) at Bayhealth Medical Center

• Supplemental Application (if received)

• Unique Factors (e.g. awards and recognitions, program signal, regional preference, honor society membership, or other qualities)

If an applicant does not meet one or more preferred criteria, the applicant will not be automatically disqualified.

The Program will consider applicants who require a visa. At this time, we can only sponsor J-1 visas.

Ranking is completed by the Program Director with guidance from a selection committee. The Program will submit its rank list to the NRMP in advance of the deadline. Interviewed applicants are encouraged to ask any questions after the interview day that may help them in determining their own rank list.
